Your treatment starts with an extensive conversation about your past and current medical history, existing conditions and lifestyle.
During the Oriental Medical Examination, the pulses on both your wrists will be carefully examined. There are 12 pulse positions on each wrist and each position corresponds to a specific meridian and organ. Your tongue reflects the general health of your organs and will be checked for color, shape, cracks and coating.
To come to a proper diagnosis, it is important that the practitioner gets a complete picture of your health and way of life. Instead of focusing on the symptoms of your condition, Oriental Medicine treats the causes of your condition by focusing on the whole person.
Expect to spend about two hours for your first visit: the first thirty to sixty minutes are spent on your health history, current state of health and diagnostic procedures. Then, you will receive your first acupuncture treatment lasting thirty to forty minutes. Your subsequent visits will usually be about forty-five to sixty minutes long as the treatment will be adjusted according to your body’s progress.
Other modalities of Oriental Medicine may be part of your treatment as well: moxibustion, cupping or gwa sha. Read more about these modalities here.
If justified, a customized herbal formula will be prescribed. Herbal therapy comprises the careful combination of four to fifteen herbs, where different herbs perform various function within the formula. Thousands of years of use and research have concluded that this is more effective than large doses of a single substance.
